The Ovarian Cancer Survivors' Quilt
Sheila Walkerden
Sidney, Australia
August 12, 1996
I remember the shock and the urgency I felt when I was diagnosed with a problem that put me at risk of cancer. Everything happened so quickly, my surgery was completed in 10 days which were busy with tests and organizing for work to go on while I was away. Then came the confirmation that the ovarian cyst was benign, and that I was ok. At home convalescing I was puzzled to realise I was angry as well as happy. It was because I had lost control of my life for a while, and that was frightening. I felt the same thing again recently when I had duodenal ulcers diagnosed, and had two weeks' treatment. This time I knew what the anger was about! I'm not an angry person ordinarily, so it's been revealing for me! So my contribution to the quilt expresses in vivid colours some of the things that symbolise to me the love of life we share. My good wishes to you and the project, and to all the other women contributing.
